The increasing demand for hops by craft and home brewers has been creating a supply shortage and the cost of hops has been increasing rapidly! Since 2012, the average price for a pound of hops is up almost 13% and hop prices are expected to continue to increase over the next year.
The key problem is that hop production has not been able to keep pace with the worlds rapidly growing thirst for more bitter and aroma pact beers! Beers such as IPA's, Double IPA's and any dry hopped beer for that matter may double, triple or even quadruple the quantity of hops required to brew over what would go into a typical craft beer. The result has been an increase in prices and in some cases certain hops have become completely unavailable to brewers because demand exceeded production.
